Join an immersive day learning amphibian ecology and practical survey techniques, starting at Tyland Barn and finishing with a torchlight survey at Vinters Valley Nature Reserve. This study day explains how to recognise British amphibian species, the habitats they favour and the factors that restrict their presence. You will learn how to assess ponds by day to identify features that make them suitable for amphibians and plan an effective after-dark survey.
The course covers why different survey methods are used, how the purpose of a survey affects method choice, and the legislation that protects amphibians and what this means for surveyors. Sessions combine classroom guidance with field practice, including visits to ponds where you may see amphibians and opportunities to refine identification and recording skills.
After dusk there will be a site visit to Vinters Valley to put your skills into practice with a torchlight survey. The day is led by Mandy Billett, Chartered Ecologist and Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group member. The event is suitable for beginners and improvers, but please note attendees must be 18 or over.
Participants can join the Great Crested Newt Monitoring Project, and those who contribute amphibian records to the Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group may be eligible for a course refund from KRAG. Presence of amphibians varies with weather, though late February is often ideal. Vinters Valley is about a 10 minute drive from Tyland Barn and has on-road parking in a cul de sac.
