Join An Introduction to Geology at Tyland Barn for a friendly, beginner-friendly study day that explores rocks, minerals, fossils and the forces that shape our planet. Through clear explanations and practical examples you will learn how to tell rocks and minerals apart, examine different rock types and investigate what fossils can reveal about life in the past. This course is suitable for newcomers with an interest in Earth science. Please note only adults aged 18 and over may attend.
The session is delivered using a PowerPoint presentation supported by a small practical kit, which will be shared between two students. There will be opportunities to handle geological specimens and fossil casts, and short exercises will reinforce learning. Topics include a simple classification of rocks, a closer look at a sandstone and two types of igneous rock, and the mineral properties used to identify samples.
Plate tectonics is covered in detail, with examples that explain volcanoes, earthquakes and mountain building and the evidence that supports continental movement. The fossil section outlines the difference between body fossils and trace fossils and focuses on ammonites as a window into ancient life and environmental change.
By the end of the day you should understand the difference between rocks and minerals, the role of plate tectonics and the distinction between trace and body fossils. For further information please visit the Study Days page of the Kent Wildlife Trust website.
