Fri, 22 May 2026 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Great Lines, Gillingham, ME7 5DQ

Overview

Join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for a free guided tour as part of CWGC War Graves Week at Chatham Naval Memorial. Led by experienced volunteer tour guides, this approachable walk explains the memorials, the history of naval commemoration and the stories behind the names recorded on the obelisk. Chatham Naval Memorial commemorates 8,517 sailors of the First World War and 10,098 of the Second World War, and the tour offers a respectful, informative introduction to this important site.

The tour meets in the small car park adjacent to the memorial and lasts approximately 60 minutes, covering about 200 metres. There is wheelchair access, but please note the memorial sits on top of a hill and the route can be steep in places. Limited parking is available nearby and there are no facilities or toilets on site, so attendees are advised to bring water and any necessary provisions. Please wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather as it can be quite windy at the top.

These tours are free to the public, though donations to the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation are welcome to support education and outreach. Please be aware there can be last minute cancellations due to illness, site issues or weather; organisers will email ticket-holders as soon as possible, so check your messages before travelling. This guided visit is a respectful way to learn about naval service and remembrance in Chatham.
