Join the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Medway Valley Countryside Partnership at Allington Lock to become a trained citizen scientist helping to protect the Critically Endangered European eel. This practical training session will prepare volunteers to monitor the migration of elvers into the River Medway as part of the Thames European Eel Project, contributing to a long-term dataset that has been collected since 2005.
Training will be provided in person on Thursday 30th April and covers eel biology, the threats eels face, how to safely check eel traps, and how to count, measure and release any eels found. You will also be shown how to upload your survey data to the ZSL website so your records feed directly into ongoing research. Monitoring runs from the start of April until the end of September, so participants should be able to commit to surveys throughout the summer months. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over and able to attend the training session in person. This is a brilliant opportunity to gain practical field skills, support vital conservation work and spend time outdoors on the riverbank.
