Mon, 20 Apr 2026 08:00 AM - 14:30 PM
This four-day workshop, running April 20 @ 09:00 - April 23 @ 15:30, is designed for experienced bricklayers who want to learn the traditional method of creating a gauged arch. You will cover the geometry of an arch, drawing and creating an arch template, techniques for cutting bricks and different mortar mixes. The course combines demonstration with practical time so you can practise drawing, cutting and building an arch.
Practical sessions give delegates the chance to develop their skills with individual guidance from the tutor. The course is informal and learning takes place through discussion, observation, locality tours and hands-on practice. H&S equipment such as safety goggles and gloves is provided, although you may bring your own if you prefer. Bring a notepad and pen if you wish to make notes.
Charles Reilly, managing director of Georgian Brickwork, leads the training. Charles is an experienced craftsman specialising in the repair of heritage brick buildings and has developed the Georgian Brickwork training programme to pass on traditional skills to the next generation of bricklayers. Courses for bricklayers have a maximum of two to three students to ensure time for individual questions and tips.
The Georgian Brickwork Professional Development Programme is hosted by Heritage Brickwork Training Ltd at Unit 6, Craft Workshop, The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent ME4 4TE. Lunch is available to buy from onsite eateries or you may bring your own and use the outdoor spaces. For travel options and parking, visit the dockyard website.
