Join a practical study day at Tyland Barn to learn how to identify native broad-leaved trees and shrubs in winter by examining twigs, buds and bark. During the morning you will work in the classroom with simplified keys and a variety of twigs for hands-on practice. In the afternoon the group will move into the nature park to apply identification techniques to a wide range of native deciduous species. By focusing on features of winter twigs you will gain the confidence to recognise common native trees when leaves are absent.
The day is led by botanist and ecologist Ros Bennett, an experienced tutor and author whose identification keys will guide the session. This course is suitable for beginners and for anyone who does not feel confident identifying trees in winter. Copies of simplified keys will be provided, so there is no need to buy the book beforehand. Trees and shrubs are an important part of the local natural heritage and other wildlife depends on them year round.
