Introduction to Orchids

Mon, 01 Jun 2026 09:00 AM - 15:00 PM

Overview

Introduction to Orchids is a one-day field course in Kent that explores the fascinating world of native orchids. You will learn about wild orchids, their life cycles, where to find them and how to identify key species, with particular emphasis on local Kent flora. The morning session provides an overview of the county's orchid species and their sometimes complex pollination behaviours, plus practical guidance on when and where to look for orchids in the wider British landscape.

In the afternoon the group will visit Monkton to search for some of the 11 orchid species recorded there, including seven species that should be in flower in early June. Led by Dr Clive Nuttman, an environmental biologist experienced in the ecology and conservation of Kent's orchids, the course covers the special relationships orchids have with fungi and pollinating insects and offers hands-on practice in field identification. By the end of the day participants should be more confident at recognising species in the field and better informed about seasonal timing and habitat. Suitable for nature lovers, amateur botanists and anyone keen to deepen their knowledge of wild plants, this Introduction to Orchids is ideal if you want to improve your identification skills and discover where to find these rare and beautiful plants.
