Introduction to Pollinators

Sat, 27 Jun 2026 09:00 AM - 15:00 PM

Overview

Join a practical study day at Tyland Barn to learn how to identify pollinators and understand their ecology. This hands-on workshop, led by Rosie Bleet, Ecological Evidence and Citizen Science Lead for Kent Wildlife Trust, combines classroom learning with field practice to give a rounded introduction to the animals that move pollen between flowers and support plants, ecosystems and food production.

The morning session takes place in the classroom with a presentation on pollinator ecology and detailed guidance on recognising common groups such as bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles and wasps. After lunch you will explore the Tyland Barn wildlife garden where there will be time to practise catching pollinators with a net and to examine them up close in the field. The practical element is ideal for anyone wanting confidence in handling and identifying insects safely and ethically.

By the end of the day you should have a better understanding of pollinator ecology, be able to recognise several common pollinators and feel confident catching and studying them in the field. This event is suitable for nature lovers, volunteer recorders and anyone interested in citizen science and wildlife gardening.
