Mini Museum Explorers: The Art of a Medal

Tue, 12 May 2026 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Prince Arthur Rd, Gillingham, ME7 1UR

Overview

Mini Museum Explorers: The Art of a Medal at the Royal Engineers Museum is a hands-on session designed for under 5s and their parents, grandparents and carers. Each session explores a different part of the Museum's collections through play, stories, trails, simple crafts and playful science activities, helping young children build communication skills and curiosity about the world and the work of the Royal Engineers.

Sessions run on the second Tuesday of each month during term time from 10am to 11am and are led by museum staff who introduce children to objects and ideas in an age-appropriate way. For this themed session children will discover why medals are awarded, how they are designed and what they mean to service personnel.

Minis will view and safely handle examples from the Museum's collection and then create their own medal. Activities include designing a colourful ribbon with pens and using clay tools to add carved details to the face of a medal, combining creative play with simple practical skills.

Places are limited to 20 under 5s, so please book in advance. The cost is £4 per session per child, with discounts available via the Museum's loyalty scheme and free places for military families. Normal museum admission prices also apply.
