Mitch Benn presents The Lehrer Effect, a lively tribute to comic songwriting legend Tom Lehrer at The Alex. Expect a skilful mix of witty originals, Lehreresque numbers and a few Mitch Benn-ified covers from the catalogue Mr Lehrer placed in the public domain. With humour at the heart of his songwriting, Mitch explores Lehrer's lasting influence on satirical song, storytelling and musical comedy while delivering sharp observations and memorable melodies.
Since Tom Lehrer died aged 97, this performance now reads as a warm and heartfelt eulogy as well as a celebration of his work. Mitch draws on decades of affection for Lehrer, reflecting on the songs that inspired him and performing material that highlights the links between satire, melody and social commentary. Fans of musical comedy will appreciate the clever wordplay, the comic timing and the affectionate nods to Lehrer's most famous pieces.
The event is taking place at The Alex and is still going ahead, but please note it has been relocated to the venue's Bar area following a fire in the main hall on New Year’s Eve. Attendees are advised to check The Alex website for any further updates. Whether you know Tom Lehrer’s catalogue well or are new to his work, this show promises an entertaining evening of music, laughter and thoughtful tribute.
