Join an inspiring OPAL open day at Hernhill C of E Primary School in Kent to see how play can transform school life. This event is ideal for non-OPAL schools curious about the OPAL Primary Programme and for current OPAL schools looking for Next Steps ideas. Expect to be inspired by a double-platinum playtime where children build dens, get muddy, investigate archaeological finds, manage risk and enjoy extensive loose-parts, a large sandpit, water play and a tractor play area.
Arrival for non-OPAL schools is at 11:15 am. The morning includes a presentation from the headteacher, curricular lead and an OPAL mentor outlining the impact, costs and practical steps of the OPAL programme. From 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm there will be observation of playtime, with current and Next Steps OPAL schools joining at 12:15 pm. At 1:00 pm there is a short photo and question session, and non-OPAL visitors depart. A 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm workshop will support Next Steps and current OPAL schools to sustain relaxed vigilance, respond to change and keep momentum over time.
Hernhill is a rural 200-pupil church school near Faversham that has achieved double Platinum status and is working towards a third accreditation that could make it the first OPAL Honours school in Kent. The site features loose-parts storage, a play museum, muddy trenches, parkour tyres and creative play solutions that work in all weathers.
Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own lunch. The school car park usually has spaces and it is about a 15-minute taxi ride from Faversham station. Times may change by up to 30 minutes and attendees will be emailed with final timings. Find out more about the programme at www.outdoorplayandlearning.org.uk.
