Reptile Ecology and Survey Techniques

Sat, 23 May 2026 09:00 AM - 15:00 PM

Overview

Join a practical study day on reptile ecology and survey techniques at Tyland Barn with a field visit to Vinters Valley Nature Reserve. Led by Steve Songhurst of the Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group (KRAG), this session is ideal for beginners and anyone looking to improve identification and survey skills for reptiles in Kent.

The morning begins in the classroom with clear, hands-on tuition covering reptile ecology, how to identify species and the key components of good reptile habitat. You will learn established survey techniques and what to look for when assessing sites for reptiles. In the afternoon the group will travel to Vinters Valley Nature Reserve to carry out a practical survey and habitat assessment, and to see how site management can be adapted to create and improve habitats for reptiles and other wildlife.

By the end of the day participants will be able to name and identify all four native reptiles found in Kent, describe the essential elements of suitable reptile habitat and understand at least two methods for surveying reptiles. Please note that study days are for adults aged 18 and over. Toilets are available at Tyland Barn and Vinters Valley is approximately a 10 minute drive away with on-road parking and toilet facilities.

For further information, please visit the Study Days page of the Kent Wildlife Trust website and book to secure your place on this practical, conservation-focused course.
