S-Club Sessions are social groups for young people with Down's syndrome aged 11 to early 20s, running from Maidstone Community Support Centre. The programme is split into three focused sessions: smiLE therapy, skills and social. Each strand is designed to build communication, confidence and practical life skills in a friendly, supportive environment.
The smiLE therapy block teaches young people to take responsibility for their own communication and learning, to prevent or repair communication breakdown, and to use a range of strategies to make their message clear. Sessions include work on social behaviours such as greetings and turn taking, plus strategies to clarify information and work respectfully with peers.
The skills sessions are PSHE focused and cover topics such as friendships, relationships, bodies and appropriate behaviour. These curriculum-led activities are delivered by a specialist Education Lead and use fun, practical learning. The social session allows time to practise these skills, make friends and reduce isolation. S-Club runs in blocks of 10 consecutive Saturdays, typically 10:00 to 15:30, with individual group session times emailed to families. Sessions are based at Marsham Street, Maidstone, ME14 1HH.
