The Geology of Kent

Fri, 13 Mar 2026 10:30 AM - 16:30 PM

Overview

Join this illustrated study day exploring the geology of Kent and discover how the county landscape reflects its underlying rocks. The Geology of Kent takes attendees through the sequence of sedimentary beds from the oldest Coal Measures and Wealden Beds to the younger sands, clays and Chalk, using maps and images to show how geological structures shape features such as the High Weald and the Low Weald.

The day covers Late Jurassic beds near the county boundary, the Early Cretaceous Wealden deposits, and the succession of Lower Greensand, Gault Clay and Chalk deposited in different marine environments. There is also a detailed look at localised sediments including the Lenham Beds, Sarsen Stones, periglacial and river deposits and coastal sediments, with attention to the fossils and rock types you can find in each unit.

By the end of the day you will have a clear understanding of the environments in which London Clay, Chalk, Lower Greensand and the Wealden Beds were laid down and how to interpret the physical landscape in geological terms. The course is suitable for beginners and includes practical skills such as using a hand lens to examine rocks. Please note only adults aged 18 and over can attend.
