The Role and History of Trinity House – the General Lighthouse Authority

Wed, 04 Mar 2026 18:00 PM - 19:30 PM

Eclipse Park, Eclipse House, Sittingbourne Rd, Maidstone, ME14 3EN

Overview

Join the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport for an expert-led talk on the role and history of Trinity House, the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. The session will be presented by Valerie Owen, a Board Member of Trinity House, and is scheduled in person with a virtual option: registration from 18:00, event start at 18:30 and close at 19:30. The in-person venue is DHA Planning, Eclipse House, Eclipse Park, Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone, ME14 3EN, with a Zoom link also available.

Valerie will explore the long history of Trinity House, founded by Royal Charter in 1514, and its continuing mission to maintain navigational aids such as lighthouses, lightvessels and buoys, plus communications services and pilotage for ships operating in the North Sea. The talk will explain how these services are financed through light dues on commercial vessels and how the organisation supports the safety, welfare and training of mariners.

Discussion will focus on the current and future strategic challenges facing Trinity House, including geopolitical instability, shifting shipping patterns, the impact of a changing climate and rapidly advancing technology. Attendees will gain insight into how a centuries-old charitable organisation is adapting to modern maritime demands while continuing to protect seafarers and coastal communities.

Booking: Members attend free, non-members £5.00. This event carries one CPD hour and is especially relevant for professionals and students interested in maritime safety, transport infrastructure and resilience.
