Mon, 13 Apr 2026 08:00 AM - 14:30 PM
This professional development workshop is aimed at experienced heritage bricklayers who want to deepen their skill in the traditional craft of tuck pointing. Running from 13 to 16 April, 09:00 to 15:30, the course is led by Charles Reilly, a highly experienced craftsman and managing director of Georgian Brickwork. Sessions cover making a Frenchman tool, methods and materials for colour washing brickwork, applying the stopping, and creating a finish with the putty ribbon. Participants will have practical opportunities to try each stage and will complete several panels of tuck pointed brickwork.
Learning is informal and takes place through discussion, demonstration, locality tours and hands-on practice. Charles provides individual guided support during practical sessions, and courses for bricklayers are limited to a maximum of two students to ensure focused tuition. The workshop assumes experience using lime mortar; if you are unfamiliar with lime work it is recommended you attend the one day Understanding and Using Lime Mortar GBB1 first, or discuss booking both courses back to back with the office.
Basic health and safety equipment such as safety goggles and gloves are provided, though you may bring your own. Bring a notepad if you wish to take notes. Lunch can be bought from eateries at The Historic Dockyard or you may bring your own and use outdoor spaces such as the Commissioner’s Garden or Tennis Court Lawn. The training is hosted at Unit 6, Craft Workshop, The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent, ME4 4TE.
