Wai Khru Ram Muay + Clinch

Mon, 25 Aug 2025 17:00 PM - 18:30 PM

St Batholomew's Chapel Gundulf Road, High St, Rochester, ME1 1DP

Overview

Wai Khru Ram Muay is the traditional Muay Thai ritual that honours teachers and the art of boxing. The name breaks down into Khru, the Thai form of the Sanskrit word guru meaning teacher; Ram, the Thai word for dancing in a classical style; and Muay, which means boxing. Together the term can be translated as a war dance saluting the teacher, a ceremonial performance fighters use to show respect and prepare mentally before engaging in the match.

This session also covers Muay Thai clinch work, the close-range upper body grappling component of Muay Thai. Clinch techniques resemble Greco style wrestling but also include effective knee strikes, elbow attacks and a range of sweeps to unbalance an opponent. Practising the clinch improves balance, timing and control while giving a realistic foundation for close-quarters striking and defensive tactics.
