Wilder Gardens Workshop: Introduction to Wildlife Gardening

Thu, 16 Apr 2026 10:30 AM - 13:00 PM

Overview

Get started creating a garden with nature at its heart in this spring Wilder Gardens workshop at Tyland Barn. Ideal for people new to gardening or anyone wanting to refresh their skills, the session explains how to design a space that is both beautiful and welcoming to wildlife. You will be introduced to the core principles of wildlife gardening and shown practical ways to bring them into your own outside space.

The Wilder Gardens team will cover the benefits of wildlife-friendly planting, how to choose and maintain plants with nature in mind, creating habitats and naturally managing common garden pests. The workshop includes a guided exploration of the farmhouse garden, mixed meadows and nature park, led by the Nature Parks & Gardens Development Officer who will demonstrate the principles discussed and point out spring highlights across the grounds.

After the tour there is a hands-on activity such as sowing seeds, propagating or making a bug hotel to take home. The first part of the workshop is indoors before heading outside, so please dress for both and bring a pair of gardening gloves if you have them. If you are a complete beginner you can ask to borrow gloves for practical tasks.

The session will go ahead in most weathers but may be postponed in the event of a severe forecast. You will have time afterwards to explore the gardens at your leisure and visit the on-site cafe. Book a place to gain tips and inspiration to nurture wildlife in your garden this year.
