Join Photoworks in partnership with Sun Pier House for Writing for Artists: Statements, Open Calls & Competitions, a practical 2-hour workshop and talk led by curator and writer Anne Nwakalor. Designed for emerging and established artists, this session breaks down the writing process and gives clear, usable tools to help you communicate your practice, refine proposals and submit stronger entries to open calls and competitions.
Through a mix of short talk, examples and guided exercises you will learn how to write a clear and compelling artist statement, craft a focused project statement, and produce persuasive proposals. Anne will share practical tips from her extensive experience as founding editor of No! Wahala Magazine and as a reviewer and juror for major photography prizes, helping you sharpen language and structure so reviewers understand your intent and impact.
Attendees are encouraged to bring written questions about specific open calls and competitions for a Q and A. The session includes one hot or cold soft drink from the Sun Pier House cafe. Part of the Photoworks Photography Champions programme, this workshop supports photographers and image makers across England and is backed by public funding from Arts Council England.
Leave with draft statements, actionable advice and greater confidence to apply for opportunities. Suitable for photographers, visual artists and practitioners looking to improve their written submissions and present their work more effectively.
